How to get a literary agent

So you've written your first book. Now read our tips on that crucial first step to landing a deal

1 START by introducing yourself with a query: a typed, double-spaced one-page letter. In it give a brief synopsis of your nonfiction work, an overview of the market and your own credentials. Be sure to include a self-addressed stamped envelope to make it easy for the agency to respond. "Make it short and sweet," says Marie Brown of Marie Brown Associates, who represents Colin Channer and Carl Weber. "Agents only need a taste to see if they're interested."

2 CHECK OUT writers' gatherings, like the National Black Writers Conference, held each spring, and the Southern Women Writers Conference, ([706] 232-5374), held every fall. Trade journals such as Publishers Weekly and Poets & Writers are ideal to get the 411 on the industry, including the latest trends and news from insiders.

1. Promote Your Website
Add your author bio at the end of each article with a short ad for your products or services and a link to your website. People who like your article and click on your link will be more ready to buy from you than a cold prospect.

2. Promote Affiliate Products
You can promote affiliate products in your author bio, and make commissions on all the sales you refer. Just register a domain name (so your link at the end of the article looks professional), and redirect it to your affiliate link.
